Al Zaitunia Mosque and University stands as a historic Islamic institution, reflecting rich heritage, knowledge, and spiritual significance in Tunis city.
Al Zaitunia Mosque and University is one of the oldest and most significant Islamic landmarks in Tunis. Known for its deep historical roots, this mosque has served both as a place of worship and a center of learning for centuries. Covering an area of approximately 5000 square meters, it reflects the architectural beauty and intellectual legacy of early Islamic civilization.
The mosque is designed with nine entrances, allowing easy access for worshippers and visitors. Its structure includes around 160 authentic columns, many of which were brought from the ancient city of Carthage. These columns add to the historical and artistic value of the mosque, making it a remarkable blend of different eras and cultures.
Beyond its architectural importance, Al Zaitunia is widely recognized as one of the largest and oldest universities in the Islamic world. It has produced many great scholars who contributed significantly to Islamic knowledge, education, and intellectual traditions. The institution played a central role in preserving and spreading religious teachings across generations.
The mosque’s construction dates back to the Abbasid period, when a caliph ordered its establishment. Later, it was further developed and expanded by Nasir U Din Allah, enhancing its structure and importance. Over time, it became a symbol of both spiritual devotion and academic excellence.
Today, Al Zaitunia Mosque and University continues to represent a powerful connection between faith, history, and education. It stands as a reminder of the golden age of Islamic scholarship and remains an important cultural and religious site admired by visitors from around the world.
