Last Words of Imam Ali (Urdu) – Historical Account of the Martyrdom of Hazrat Ali

The story of the final days of Imam Ali (RA), the fourth Caliph of Islam, is one of the most significant and emotional events in early Islamic history. Known for his wisdom, courage, and deep devotion to justice, Imam Ali played a central role in shaping the early Muslim community. His martyrdom in 661 CE during the holy month of Ramadan left a lasting impact on the Islamic world and continues to be remembered with respect and reflection.

According to historical records, the tragic event occurred on the 19th of Ramadan in 661 CE in the city of Kufa. While Imam Ali was leading the Fajr prayer in the mosque, a Kharijite named Ibn Muljim attacked him with a sword coated in poison. The strike caused severe injuries to his head. Despite the efforts of those around him, the wounds proved fatal, and Imam Ali passed away two days later. His martyrdom marked the third assassination of a successive caliph, following the deaths of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab and Caliph Uthman ibn Affan.

Historians often trace the roots of this tragedy to the political divisions that arose within the Muslim community after the passing of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Over time, disagreements and conflicts led to tensions that eventually resulted in violent confrontations. The assassination of Imam Ali is widely discussed in Islamic history under titles such as “Shahadat-e-Imam Ali,” “Shahadat Mola Ali,” and “Assassination of Hazrat Ali (A.S.).”

Several traditions mention that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had foretold the fate of Imam Ali. One narration describes the Prophet telling Ali that one day his beard would be colored with the blood flowing from his head. Another narration compares the worst criminal of earlier times—who killed the camel of Prophet Salih (A.S.)—with the person who would eventually assassinate Imam Ali.

Historical accounts also mention a figure named Quttam, connected to the events surrounding the assassination. Ibn Muljim reportedly met her in Kufa among members of the Taym al-Ribab tribe, who were mourning relatives lost in the Battle of Nahrawan. According to some narratives, Quttam demanded revenge for the deaths of her family members and agreed to marry Ibn Muljim only if he fulfilled certain conditions, including the killing of Imam Ali. These events ultimately led to the tragic incident that changed the course of Islamic history.
