We can divide the timeline of ancient Greece into 04 ages. For 1100 BCE, we have no recorded history of this age. So this age is called the dark age of Greek History. Homer was the first historian in 800 to 750 BCE. Homer composed his poems – the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Iliad is an epic poem set in the Trojan War while the Odyssey tells the story of the adventures of Odysseus on his return from the Trojan war.
The Greek Timeline
- The Greek Dark Age 1100 to 800 BCE
- The Archaic Period 800 to 480 BCE
- The Classical Period 510 to 333 BCE
- The Hellenistic Period 323 to 31 BCE
Trojan War 1194 to 1184 BCE
The Trojan war between the Greeks and the Trojans (inhabitants of Troy) began in 1194 BCE. The Trojan war ended in 1184 BCE when the Greeks used a wooden horse to invade and overrun the Trojan city of Troy.
Democracy in Greece
We still use this term nowadays, Democracy means the rule by people. In Greece, male citizens had a chance to vote. They decide by their votes how a city should be run. In 490-480 BCE, the Persian empire was run by a powerful king, Darius. This Persian empire was controlled from the Middle East. The Greek victories kept the growing Persian Empire in check.
Greek Theaters
Greek theaters became the popular first time in Athens in 472 BCE. The Greeks found entertainment by visiting the theaters to see magicians, jugglers, and plays. The actors often wore masks to show the people if they are happy or sad.
King of Macedonia
In 338 BCE, the King of Macedonia, Philip II took the control of Greece. After his death, his son, Alexander the Great, took the throne. Alexander the Great, then went to conquer Egypt, the Persian Empire, Middle East, and Indus Valley. However, many historians stated it is only a myth. His reign is known as the Hellenistic Period of Greek Timeline.
Greece Become the Part of Roman Empire
In 146 BCE, The Romans conquers Greece. Therefore, Greece becomes a part of Rome. The Romans created a great empire and absorbed many aspects of the Greek and Hellenistic culture on their own. In conclusion, No treatment of the main period of Greek civilization should end without emphasizing the continuity both with what went before and with what came after.
