Biography, Virtues and Scholarly Legacy of Imam e Azam Abu Hanifa

Imam Azam Abu Hanifa is a comprehensive Urdu work based on the famous Arabic book Tabyid al-Sahifa fi Manaqib al-Imam Abi Hanifa authored by Allama Jalaluddin Suyuti. This valuable translation has been completed by Dr. Qari Khalil Ahmad Thanwi, who undertook the task upon the instruction of Syed Mumtaz Shah. The translator describes this opportunity as a great honor and spiritual blessing.

While translating the original Arabic text, Dr. Khalil Ahmad Thanwi also incorporated beneficial annotations written by Maulana Muhammad Ashiq Ilahi, presenting them under separate headings for clarity. In addition, he included an important article written by his respected father, Hazrat Maulana Mufti Jamil Ahmad Thanwi, in which he establishes through scholarly evidence that Imam Abu Hanifa truly deserves the title Imam-e-Azam.

Upon the suggestion of his teacher, Mufti Mahmood Ashraf Usmani, an article titled “Malfoozat Imam Azam,” previously published in Al-Balagh, was also added to the book. Furthermore, brief biographies of notable scholars such as Imam Jalaluddin al-Suyuti, Mufti Jamil Ahmad Thanwi, and Maulana Ashiq al-Nabi al-Barni have been included at the beginning, making this edition more informative and well-rounded.

The book highlights the noble lineage of Imam Abu Hanifa, whose full name was Nu‘man bin Thabit bin Nu‘man bin Marzban. His title “Abu Hanifa” became more famous than his personal name, and he was honored with the title Imam-e-Azam due to his unmatched contribution to Islamic jurisprudence. Historical reports mention that he was born in 80 AH in Kufa. His scholarship laid the foundations of Hanafi Fiqh, which remains one of the most widely followed schools of Islamic law.

“علم اور عدل کا حسین امتزاج” — a beautiful combination of knowledge and justice — truly reflects his personality. The translator concludes with heartfelt prayers that Allah accepts this effort and counts him among the devoted servants of Imam Abu Hanifa.
