The narrative revolves around Zaid bin Harith, a man who had not yet embraced Islam and wished to examine the truthfulness of the Prophet’s message. With a curious and questioning mindset, he planned to visit Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and decided to present a gift as part of his test.
Upon his visit, Zaid observed a way of life that was very different from the customs and traditions of the Arab tribes. The simplicity and humility left a strong impression on him. When he asked about this lifestyle, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explained that all human beings are equal before Allah, and only piety and abstinence elevate a person’s status.
Still seeking reassurance, Zaid placed a condition. He offered twelve coins and suggested that the Prophet should buy a new shirt using that amount. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) accepted the proposal and sent Hazrat Ali (R.A) along with Zaid to the market to purchase the shirt.
At the market, a relatively expensive shirt was initially selected. However, when this was presented, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) preferred simplicity and instructed that a modest and less expensive garment be chosen instead. When no such option was available, the coins were returned rather than spending unnecessarily.
This simple yet profound incident deeply impacted Zaid bin Harith. It demonstrated that the Prophet (PBUH) practiced what he preached, valuing modesty over materialism. The consistency between words and actions became a powerful proof of sincerity and truth.
