A Loneliest Commander – Episode 3 | Division in Kufa After Martyrdom
In the previous episodes, political tension was rising both in Syria and Iraq after the martyrdom of Imam Ali (A.S). While Muawiya strengthened his position in Syria, Kufa was facing its own internal instability.
Following the assassination of Imam Ali (A.S) by Ibn-e-Muljim, large crowds gathered for his funeral. Among those present were members of the Khawarij, the very group connected with the ideology that led to his assassination. Despite attending the funeral, they refused to pledge allegiance to Imam Hasan (A.S) as the new Imam and Caliph.
However, their stance was politically calculated. They declared that although they would not recognize Imam Hasan’s leadership, they would support him militarily if he chose to confront Muawiya. This conditional loyalty exposed the fragile unity within Kufa and foreshadowed the loneliness that Imam Hasan (A.S) would face in leadership.
Episode 3 highlights the internal divisions within the Muslim community. Political hesitation, conditional support, and fragmented loyalty made leadership extremely difficult. The title “A Loneliest Commander” becomes increasingly meaningful as Imam Hasan (A.S) stands at the center of a divided society.
