From a young age he was surrounded by scholars and religious teachers, which helped shape his passion for Islamic knowledge. He later pursued formal education under prominent scholars of his time.
Among his teachers was the renowned scholar Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, under whom he studied for several years. He also maintained close intellectual connections with notable scholars such as Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi and Maulana Mahmud al-Hasan. After completing his studies, Maulana Ilyas began teaching at the well-known Islamic institution Mazahirul Uloom in Saharanpur.
During the early twentieth century, Maulana Ilyas observed that many Muslims had become distant from religious practices and knowledge. In response, he initiated a movement focused on reviving faith and encouraging Muslims to practice Islamic teachings in daily life. This effort gradually developed into what later became known as the Tablighi Jamaat, a movement dedicated to preaching and spiritual reform.
