A Scholarly Discussion on Ilm e Nabvi and the Concept of Mutashabihat
Ilm e Nabvi aur Mutashabihat (Hidden Knowledge) is a detailed scholarly work that explores the theological debate surrounding the knowledge granted to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, particularly regarding unseen matters and the interpretation of Mutashabihat (ambiguous verses). The book emerged as a response to arguments presented in Maulana Sarfraz Safdar’s booklet Azala tul Raib, where specific viewpoints about the limits of prophetic knowledge were discussed.
[Free PDF download ##fa-file-pdf-o##]The original debate addressed several key topics, including whether the Prophet ﷺ was granted knowledge of worldly affairs, awareness of hypocrites, and understanding of Mutashabihat. It also discussed certain historical events such as the decision regarding the captives of Badr and the funeral prayer of Abdullah bin Ubayy. The author considered these interpretations inconsistent with established evidences and therefore initiated a detailed written correspondence seeking clarification.
Due to Maulana Safdar’s illness, responses were provided by his son, Hafiz Abdul Quddus. This exchange of views continued through serialized articles published in monthly journals including Sooye Hijaz and Nusrat ul Uloom. Eventually, both sides of the discussion—three episodes from one side and thirteen from the other—were compiled into a single book to provide readers with comprehensive material for independent understanding.
The author emphasizes that all arguments and references have been included without omission to ensure transparency and clarity. He further expresses gratitude to Allah for granting him the opportunity to defend the مقامِ رسالت ﷺ through scholarly writing. Additional related works mentioned include discussions on Ilm e Nabvi and the knowledge of hypocrites, the decision at Badr, and the validity of the funeral prayer for Abdullah bin Ubayy.
