A Loneliest Commander – Episode 6 | Propaganda and Conditional Allegiance
In Episode 5, the exchange of letters between Imam Hasan (A.S) and Muawiya failed to resolve the growing political conflict. Diplomacy did not bring unity, and both sides continued preparing for confrontation. Now the internal cracks within the Muslim community become more visible.
The Khawarij openly declared that their allegiance to Imam Hasan (A.S) was conditional. They stated that they supported him only in the context of fighting against Muawiya. Their loyalty was not based on spiritual recognition of leadership, but on political opposition.
Meanwhile, Muawiya intensified his public campaign in Syria. He began persuading people that he was more eligible for leadership due to seniority and age. In his reply to Imam Hasan (A.S), he argued that he was more experienced and therefore deserved the caliphate. He even suggested that after his death, Imam Hasan (A.S) could assume leadership.
This proposal reflected political maneuvering rather than genuine reconciliation. The situation was no longer merely about letters — it had become a battle of narratives, influence, and public opinion.
Episode 6 reveals how propaganda and conditional loyalty weakened unity. Imam Hasan (A.S) stood firm on principles, while political rhetoric intensified across Syria and Iraq. The loneliness of leadership grows deeper as trust within his ranks begins to erode.
