After martyrdom of Imam Hassan, Hussein was selected as 3rd Imam of Shiites, and no doubt about the rightly guided caliphate was ended with the martyrdom of Imam Hassan which also proved the truth of another sayings of Prophet PBUH. Muawiya also knew that Imam Hussein will oppose all the illegal, legitimate and Un-Islamic acts of Muawiya as well as Imam Hussein a.s will also force Muawiya to follow the points of treaty between Imam Hassan and Muawiya, mentioned earlier.

Then, again, a plot was made to trap Imam Hussein, as in fact some famous persons of Kufa who were companions of Ali, wrote letters to Imam Hussein to Kufa to struggle against the legitimate acts of Muawiya. Syrian so called also knew about these letters, so, perhaps, they also wrote many many bogus and fake letters with the name and stamps of famous people of Kufa to Imam Hussein. So Imam Hussein, prior to coming to Kufa sent his representative for Pledge in name of Imam Hussein. So this episode is named as Names and Letters.
