Col Shafiq-ur-Rahman was a legendary Urdu humorist, writer, and doctor whose timeless stories continue to entertain and inspire readers.

Col Shafiq-ur-Rahman was born on 9 November 1920 near Rohtak and became one of the most celebrated humorists in Urdu literature. He was not only a gifted writer but also a qualified medical doctor who served with distinction in the armed forces. His services in both military and civilian life were recognized with the prestigious Hilal-e-Imtiaz, reflecting his dedication and excellence.

From an early stage in his life, he showed a deep interest in writing. During his school years, he began composing humorous stories that were later published in literary magazines. His first notable work, “Kirnein,” was completed before he entered medical college and published in 1938. This was followed by a series of successful books including “Shagoofay,” “Lehrain,” “Madd-o-Jazr,” “Parvaaz,” “Himaqatain,” and “Mazeed Himaqatain.” Each of these works contributed to establishing his reputation as a master of humor and storytelling.

His writing style was simple, natural, and expressive, yet filled with deep meaning. Through humor, he explored complex human emotions, relationships, and social realities. His characters, such as Razia, Shaitaan, Hukoomat Aapa, Maqsood Ghora, and others, became iconic in Urdu literature. These characters reflected real-life situations and allowed readers to connect with his stories on a personal level.

Col Shafiq-ur-Rahman’s humor was not limited to entertainment alone. His work carried subtle messages about life, empathy, and human values. After retirement, he continued to contribute to literature and served as Chairman of the Academy of Letters from 1980 to 1985. During his tenure, the institution gained new recognition as an important literary platform in Pakistan. Despite his achievements, he lived a simple and private life, focusing on knowledge, writing, and meaningful engagement with people.

He was known for his remarkable personality, sharp memory, and engaging conversations. His love for books was evident in his vast personal collection, and he often encouraged others to read and learn. His lifestyle reflected humility and discipline, and he remained deeply connected to his family and values throughout his life.
